What does fainting feel like with epilepsy?

Epileptic seizures result from abnormal bursts of electrical activity in the brain. A person may sense an unusual smell, taste, rising stomach feeling, fear, déjà vu, tingling, or flashing lights before awareness changes. They may then stare, become unresponsive, stiffen, or jerk. Confusion and marked tiredness after the event can last longer than the brief recovery typical of a simple faint. Fainting alone does not diagnose epilepsy.

Protect the person from nearby hazards and cushion their head. Move hard or sharp objects away, loosen clothing around the neck, and turn them onto their side once jerking stops. Do not restrain them, put anything in their mouth, or offer food and drink until fully alert. Time the episode and note what happened before and after it.

Call emergency services if the episode lasts longer than expected, repeats without recovery, causes a serious injury, occurs in water, affects breathing, or is a first suspected seizure. Get urgent help for pregnancy, diabetes, high fever, or persistent confusion after the event.

Ask whether the event sounds more like a seizure or faint, whether an eyewitness video would help, and how to manage future episodes. Discuss sleep, missed medicines, alcohol, illness, warning sensations, recovery time, and safety around driving or bathing.
