What does facial swelling feel like with insect bites and stings?

A local reaction can cause a small raised area, redness, itching, warmth, and tenderness. On the face, swelling may look larger because loose skin around the eyes and lips can hold fluid. A sting may leave a visible puncture or stinger, while a bite can leave a tiny central mark, but these clues are not always present. Worsening redness, increasing pain, pus, or fever can suggest infection rather than a simple local reaction.

Move away from the insect and gently wash the area. Use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods, and avoid scratching. If a stinger is visible, remove it carefully without squeezing the surrounding skin. Ask a pharmacist about a suitable treatment for itching, especially for a child, pregnancy, or other medicines. Keep the face elevated when resting and observe whether symptoms are spreading.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, repeated vomiting, dizziness, faintness, or sudden worsening after a sting or bite. Seek prompt medical advice when swelling is close to the eye, affects vision, becomes very painful, or continues to expand. Fever, pus, or redness tracking away from the site also needs assessment.

Ask whether the reaction looks local, allergic, or infected, and which treatment is safe for the affected area. Ask what to do if you are stung again, whether you need an emergency plan, and which changes should prompt reassessment.
