What does facial swelling feel like with angioedema?

Facial Swelling is a very common presentation of Angioedema. Swelling may develop over minutes or hours and can make the skin feel stretched, heavy or mildly sore. Angioedema often affects deeper tissue, so the skin may look normal or only slightly flushed. It can occur with hives and itching, but these are not always present. The mouth, tongue and throat deserve particular attention because swelling there can interfere with swallowing or breathing.

Stop and note any recently eaten food, new medicine, sting or other possible trigger, but do not delay urgent help to investigate it. Follow an existing allergy action plan. Avoid taking a suspected medicine again unless a clinician specifically advises it. A cool compress may ease discomfort while arranging medical advice, but it does not treat airway swelling.

Call emergency services immediately if swelling reaches the tongue or throat, or if there is a hoarse voice, noisy breathing, shortness of breath, trouble swallowing, faintness, vomiting with weakness or rapidly spreading swelling. Use prescribed emergency medicine as directed. Even improving symptoms require medical assessment when breathing or throat symptoms were involved.
