What does facial pain and pressure feel like with cluster headache?

Facial Pain and Pressure is a common presentation of Cluster Headache, often felt as severe one-sided pain around the eye, temple, or cheek. It may be piercing, burning, or deep, with a sense of pressure behind the eye. Attacks can come with a restless feeling rather than a desire to lie still.

Cluster Headache commonly affects one side and may cause tearing, a red eye, a blocked or runny nostril, or eyelid swelling on that same side. Attacks tend to follow a recognisable pattern for the person and may occur in bouts. Facial pressure by itself is not enough to diagnose cluster headache, because several headache and eye conditions overlap in symptoms.

Move to a calm, well-ventilated place and record when the pain began, which side is affected, and any eye or nose symptoms. Contact a clinician promptly if these attacks are new or recurring; prescribed acute treatment works best when used according to the agreed plan. Avoid driving if pain or vision symptoms make it unsafe.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness, fainting, confusion, fever with a stiff neck, or a painful red eye with vision loss. New severe one-sided facial pain also deserves prompt assessment, particularly when the pattern is different from previous headaches.
