You may notice thirst returning soon after drinking, waking with a parched mouth, or carrying water more often than usual. Some people also pass urine more frequently, feel unusually tired, or notice blurred vision. These changes can happen when glucose levels are higher than the body handles comfortably, but thirst alone cannot identify the cause. Heat, exercise, salty food, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, and medicines can also increase fluid needs.

Prediabetes may cause few noticeable symptoms, so a new or persistent thirst deserves an assessment rather than a self-diagnosis. A clinician can review your symptoms and arrange blood-glucose testing when appropriate.

Keep a simple note of when thirst begins, how often you urinate, and any changes in energy, vision, appetite, or weight. Drink to thirst and choose water regularly; avoid trying to manage the symptom with very large amounts of fluid at once.
