What does epidural steroid injection treat?

The injection places a corticosteroid, sometimes with a local anaesthetic, into the epidural space near spinal nerves. It is considered for pain that travels from the neck into an arm or from the lower back into a leg, rather than for every type of back or neck discomfort. Possible underlying conditions include cervical radiculopathy, a herniated disc, sciatica, or spinal stenosis.

The medicine can calm local inflammation, but it does not remove a disc bulge or widen a narrowed space. Relief may make movement and physiotherapy easier while the underlying problem is assessed. Your clinician will consider your symptoms, examination, imaging when needed, medicines, and other health conditions before recommending it.

Tell the treating team about medicines, allergies, infection, pregnancy, diabetes, and any blood-clotting problem. Follow instructions about eating and medicines. Afterward, take it easy as advised and notice whether pain, strength, and sensation change. A planned exercise programme may help maintain movement and function; the injection is usually one part of a broader care plan.

Contact the treating service urgently for new or worsening leg or arm weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals, severe headache that is worse upright, fever, or increasing redness at the injection site. Sudden breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or widespread rash needs emergency help.

Ask which nerve is being targeted, what benefit is realistic, how long activity should be modified, and what alternatives exist. Clarify whether you need someone to take you home, how your regular medicines should be handled, and which warning signs require immediate contact.
