What does emollient therapy treat?

Emollients are moisturising preparations such as creams, ointments, lotions or washes. They soften rough skin and form a protective layer that reduces water loss. This can ease tightness, flaking, itch and discomfort while the skin repairs itself.

A clinician may recommend them for irritant contact dermatitis, contact dermatitis, keratosis pilaris, cracked heels, corns and calluses, cradle cap or other problems where dryness weakens the outer barrier. Emollients control symptoms and protect the surface; they do not remove every underlying trigger or replace treatment for an infection.

Apply the product gently over damp skin, especially after bathing and whenever the skin feels dry. Smooth it on in the direction of hair growth rather than rubbing vigorously. Use the formulation and frequency recommended for the affected body area; thicker ointments may suit very dry patches, while lighter creams can feel easier during the day.

Keep separate products for the face, scalp and body if advised. Wash your hands after application, and keep emollients away from flames because some can make clothing or dressings catch fire more easily.

Arrange medical advice if the skin becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, weepy or crusted, or if new blisters appear. These changes can signal infection, a stronger reaction or a diagnosis that needs different treatment. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or rapidly spreading symptoms.
