What does earache feel like with earwax buildup?

The ear may feel plugged, heavy or itchy, with sounds seeming quieter or muffled. Discomfort can increase when the wax presses against the canal or when something is placed in the ear. Some people notice intermittent pain rather than a constant ache.

Earwax protects the canal, but a collection can press on sensitive skin and block sound. Water entering around the wax may intensify the plugged sensation. Earache is not specific to wax, so pain with drainage, fever or pronounced illness may point to another ear problem and needs assessment.

A clinician can look into the canal and check whether wax is present, whether the skin is inflamed and whether the eardrum can be seen.

Do not use cotton buds, hairpins or other objects to dig at the wax. They can push it deeper or scratch the canal. Keep water out if it increases discomfort, and avoid inserting earphones until the pain is understood.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a wax-softening product is suitable. Do not use drops if you have ear drainage, a known eardrum hole, ear tubes or previous ear surgery unless a professional advises it.

Seek medical advice for persistent pain, sudden hearing change, discharge, fever, ringing that is new or troublesome, or dizziness. Prompt assessment is especially sensible when symptoms started after an injury or when the ear is too tender to touch.

Ask whether wax is blocking the canal, whether it can be removed safely, and which products to avoid. Mention hearing changes, previous ear surgery, ear tubes, drainage, skin conditions and any attempt to remove the wax yourself.
