What does dry skin feel like with atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis can make the skin barrier less effective at holding in moisture. Skin may feel tight after bathing, rough to touch, or itchy enough to disturb sleep and concentration. Inflamed patches can burn or sting, while repeated scratching may leave tiny breaks, crusting, or thicker skin.

The rash often comes and goes, and common sites include the folds of the elbows and knees, hands, face, and neck. Colour changes can look different across skin tones, so texture, itch, and the pattern of inflammation are useful details to describe.

Choose short, lukewarm showers and a gentle cleanser only where needed. Apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment while the skin is still slightly damp, and repeat it whenever dryness returns. Wear soft breathable clothing, avoid known irritants, and keep nails short to reduce injury from scratching. A prescribed treatment may be needed for an active flare.
