What does dry skin feel like with asteatotic eczema?

The skin may feel papery or stretched, especially after bathing or washing. Fine lines can form a cracked, network-like pattern, with scaling and irritation over the shins, arms, or other dry areas. Itching may lead to scratching, which can create soreness and make the surface more inflamed.

Asteatotic eczema is linked with a weakened skin barrier. Dry air, hot water, frequent cleansing, and harsh soaps can remove protective oils and intensify the tight feeling. The appearance and sensation can vary from day to day.

Use lukewarm water and keep washing gentle. Apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser soon after patting the skin dry, then reapply when the skin feels tight. Creams or ointments usually provide more barrier support than thin lotions. Keep fingernails short and try pressing or cooling an itchy area instead of scratching it.
