What does difficulty swallowing feel like with tonsillitis?

Difficulty swallowing is a common presentation of Tonsillitis and often feels like a sore, swollen throat that hurts with each swallow. Pain can spread toward the ears and may make food, drinks or saliva uncomfortable to swallow.

Inflamed tonsils may look red and enlarged, sometimes with spots or a coating. You may also have fever, bad breath, swollen neck glands, headache or a muffled voice. Viral and bacterial infections can look similar, so symptoms do not by themselves show which treatment is appropriate.

Take frequent sips of cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods and rest. Avoid smoke and other throat irritants. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable pain relief and whether you need an examination or throat testing, particularly when fever or severe pain is present.

Seek urgent care for drooling, inability to swallow saliva, breathing difficulty, a muffled voice with increasing swelling, or trouble opening your mouth. Prompt review is also needed if one tonsil becomes much larger than the other or you cannot keep fluids down.
