What does difficulty swallowing feel like with strep throat?

Difficulty swallowing is a common presentation of Strep Throat and usually feels like a painful, raw throat when swallowing. The pain may be strongest with solid food, drinks or saliva and can make eating less appealing.

Strep throat may cause sudden throat pain, red or swollen tonsils, tender glands in the neck, fever and sometimes white patches. Cough and a runny nose are less characteristic than they are with many viral infections. Symptoms overlap, so the throat appearance and symptoms alone may not identify the cause.

Drink fluids in small, frequent sips and choose soft foods if they are easier to swallow. Rest your voice and use a clinician-approved pain reliever as directed for you. Arrange a medical assessment when throat pain is significant, especially if fever or swollen neck glands are present; testing may guide treatment.

Get urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, have noisy or difficult breathing, or one side of the throat becomes markedly more swollen. Seek prompt care for dehydration, worsening symptoms or difficulty opening the mouth.

Ask whether a throat test is needed, how to manage pain and fluids, whether you should avoid close contact while unwell, and when you should return if symptoms do not improve.
