What does difficulty swallowing feel like with stomach cancer?

Difficulty swallowing is a common presentation of Stomach Cancer and can feel like food slowing or sticking as it is swallowed. The sensation may be felt low in the chest or upper abdomen rather than at the back of the throat.

Some people describe pressure, discomfort after a few mouthfuls, repeated swallowing, or food coming back up. It may occur with nausea, indigestion, upper-abdominal discomfort, reduced appetite or feeling full quickly. These symptoms are not specific to stomach cancer; reflux, ulcers, inflammation and other digestive problems can produce similar sensations.

Book a medical appointment for new, persistent or worsening swallowing trouble. Record which foods trigger it, whether liquids are affected, and any associated vomiting, pain, appetite change or weight loss. Until assessed, take small bites, chew thoroughly and stop eating if food feels lodged rather than forcing it down.

Seek urgent care if you cannot swallow fluids or saliva, food is stuck, or you have breathing difficulty. Emergency assessment is also needed for vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal or chest pain, fainting or sudden weakness.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest a problem in the throat, oesophagus or stomach, whether an examination or camera test is needed, and how to maintain fluids and nutrition while waiting for assessment.
