What does difficulty swallowing feel like with oesophageal cancer?

Difficulty swallowing is a very common presentation of Oesophageal Cancer and may feel like food catching behind the breastbone. It can begin with solid foods and later affect softer foods or drinks as narrowing changes.

You might notice a sensation that food has stopped in the throat or chest, repeated swallowing, or the need to sip liquid to help food pass. Eating may take longer, and meals can become uncomfortable. Oesophageal cancer is one possible cause of dysphagia; reflux, inflammation, movement problems and other conditions can also cause it.

Arrange a prompt appointment if swallowing is becoming difficult, is recurring, or is changing over time. Note whether solids, liquids or both cause trouble, where the sticking feels located, and whether there is regurgitation, chest discomfort or unintended weight change. A clinician may arrange tests to examine swallowing and the oesophagus.

Seek urgent medical help if food becomes fully stuck, you cannot swallow saliva, or breathing is affected. Get immediate help for severe chest pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting or marked weakness.

Ask what may be causing the swallowing change, which tests are appropriate, whether you should alter food texture temporarily, and which symptoms should prompt urgent review.
