What does diarrhoea feel like with typhoid fever?

Typhoid-related bowel changes can be loose and uncomfortable, but bowel patterns vary. Some people instead become constipated, particularly early in the illness. Fever that persists or rises, headache, tiredness, abdominal pain, and feeling generally unwell can provide more context than stool texture alone. Diarrhoea by itself does not establish typhoid fever.

Arrange medical assessment if typhoid is possible, especially after travel or exposure to unsafe food or water. Drink small, regular amounts of safe fluid and use oral rehydration solution when advised. Do not share towels or prepare food for others while unwell. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not use leftover medicine.

Seek urgent care for confusion, faintness, severe abdominal pain or swelling, blood in stool, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. A persistent fever with marked weakness also warrants prompt evaluation, because typhoid can require specific testing and treatment.

Mention travel dates, food and water exposures, fever pattern, bowel changes, vomiting, medicines, and any contact with someone who was ill. Ask whether testing is needed and how to prevent passing infection to household members.
