What does diarrhoea feel like with gastroenteritis?

Diarrhoea is a very common presentation of Gastroenteritis and often feels sudden, watery, urgent, and accompanied by stomach cramps. Nausea, vomiting, fever, headache, and body aches can occur as well. Symptoms may leave you tired because the body loses fluid and salts through the bowel.

Gastroenteritis can cause repeated urges to pass stool, abdominal churning, and soreness around the abdomen. Vomiting may begin before, alongside, or after diarrhoea. A household contact with similar symptoms can be a useful clue, although it does not establish the cause. The symptoms often improve with time, but ongoing diarrhoea, severe pain, or dehydration needs medical review.

Sip water or oral rehydration fluid often rather than drinking a large amount at once. Rest, eat small bland meals when able, and avoid preparing food for other people while symptomatic. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water and clean shared bathroom surfaces. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using symptom-relief medicines, particularly for a child or if fever or blood is present.

Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe or localised abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, very little urine, blood or black stool, or severe dehydration. Contact a clinician when diarrhoea is continuing without improvement, fluid cannot be kept down, or the person affected is very young, older, pregnant, or living with a condition that increases dehydration risk.

Ask how much fluid to take, whether an oral rehydration product is suitable, and which warning signs matter for your age and health. Share the start time, stool and vomit pattern, fever, urine output, recent travel, sick contacts, and medicines.
