What does diabetes screening treat?

Screening uses a blood test, such as an HbA1c test, to assess glucose over time or a blood glucose test to check a current level. The result can point towards Prediabetes or Type 2 Diabetes, but a result may need confirmation and interpretation with your symptoms, medicines and health history.

Screening is not a treatment for complications such as Peripheral Neuropathy or Erectile Dysfunction. Finding glucose changes early can help a clinician discuss lifestyle support, monitoring or medication before problems become harder to manage. A normal result does not explain every symptom, so ongoing concerns still deserve assessment.

Ask whether you need to fast, bring a medicine list and tell the clinician about illness or medicines that could affect the result. Arrange follow-up so you understand what the result means and whether another test is needed. Depending on the plan, you may be referred to Diabetes Education Programme or Diabetes Medication Management. A Continuous Glucose Monitor is a different tool and is not the same as screening.

Seek urgent help for severe drowsiness, confusion, collapse, trouble breathing or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange prompt clinical advice for marked thirst with frequent urination, repeated vomiting or symptoms that are worsening. Do not wait for routine screening if you feel acutely unwell.

Ask which test you need, whether preparation is required, when results will be available and what follow-up each possible result would involve. Ask how other symptoms should be investigated if the screening result is normal.
