How dehydrated urine may seem
Dark Urine is a very common presentation of Dehydration. The urine may look more concentrated, with a deeper yellow or amber colour and a stronger smell. Dehydration can also cause thirst, a dry mouth, headache, dizziness, tiredness, and passing urine less often. Dark urine itself usually does not hurt; discomfort may point to another urinary problem.
Why the colour changes
When your body has less fluid available, the kidneys conserve water and produce a smaller amount of more concentrated urine. Heat, sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, or simply not drinking enough can contribute. Some foods, vitamins, medicines, liver problems, kidney problems, or bleeding can also change urine colour. The shade should be considered with your other symptoms rather than used as a diagnosis on its own.
What you can do now
Sip water regularly and replace fluids lost through sweating or stomach illness. If nausea makes drinking difficult, take small frequent sips. Once you are rehydrating, urine often becomes lighter and more frequent. Do not force large amounts of fluid if a clinician has told you to restrict fluids because of a heart or kidney condition. Avoid relying on colour alone; notice thirst, dizziness, and how often you pass urine.
When to seek medical care
Seek prompt advice if dark urine persists despite drinking, or if you have burning, fever, side or back pain, swelling, or visible blood. Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, or almost no urine. Dark brown urine with yellow skin or pale stools also needs prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your urine pattern fits dehydration and whether a urine test or blood test is needed. Mention recent heat exposure, illness, exercise, new medicines or supplements, fluid restrictions, pain, and any change in urine amount.

Questions people ask
Does dark urine always mean dehydration?
No. Food, vitamins, medicines, bleeding, and liver or kidney problems can also alter urine colour.
Can dehydration make urine smell stronger?
Yes. More concentrated urine can have a stronger smell, although pain or fever suggests another problem may need checking.
