What does chest tightness feel like with acid reflux?

Stomach acid moving upward can irritate the food pipe, creating burning or tight discomfort behind the breastbone. Symptoms may rise toward the throat, leave a sour taste, cause belching, or worsen after a large meal, bending, or lying down.

Reflux can happen without obvious heartburn, and chest tightness has many possible causes. The timing and associated symptoms can offer clues, but they cannot rule out a heart or lung problem. New or unexplained tightness should be assessed rather than self-diagnosed.

Notice whether meals, late-night eating, alcohol, coffee, spicy foods, or lying down bring on symptoms. Choose smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and avoid smoking. A pharmacist can discuss a suitable short-term reflux medicine if appropriate for you.

Do not keep treating recurring chest tightness as reflux without medical advice. Arrange a review if symptoms keep returning, swallowing becomes difficult, food sticks, or you lose weight without trying.

Call emergency services for crushing or severe chest pressure, pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder, breathlessness, fainting, cold sweating, or sudden weakness. Do this even if you suspect indigestion.
