What does chest pain feel like with a peptic ulcer?

A peptic ulcer is a sore in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine. Pain is often felt in the upper middle abdomen and can be interpreted as lower-chest discomfort. Bloating, belching, early fullness, or nausea may accompany it. The timing around meals can vary, and some ulcers cause few symptoms until a complication develops.

Chest pain also comes from the heart, lungs, muscles, and other organs. A burning quality or relation to food does not prove that an ulcer is responsible.

Arrange a medical review for recurring upper abdominal or chest discomfort, particularly if you use anti-inflammatory pain medicines. Avoid taking unapproved pain medicines to mask symptoms, and follow any prescribed ulcer treatment as directed. Keep a note of meal timing, night symptoms, vomiting, stool colour, and medicines used.

Call emergency services for chest pain with breathlessness, faintness, sweating, weakness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Seek urgent care for vomiting blood, black or tar-like stools, sudden severe abdominal pain, a rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, or feeling faint. These signs can indicate bleeding or another emergency.

Ask whether your symptoms could reflect an ulcer, reflux, or another cause, and whether your medicines need review. Discuss testing, treatment duration, foods or drinks that aggravate symptoms, and the exact signs that should send you to emergency care.
