What does chest pain feel like with angina?

Angina happens when the heart muscle temporarily receives less oxygen-rich blood than it needs. Discomfort can spread to the shoulder, arm, neck, jaw, back, or upper abdomen. Breathlessness, sweating, nausea, or unusual tiredness can occur alongside the pain. Some people notice symptoms mainly during walking, climbing stairs, emotional strain, or cold weather.

The pattern alone cannot confirm the cause. A clinician may ask about triggers, timing, associated symptoms, and health history before arranging an examination or heart tests.

Stop the activity, sit upright, and follow the personal angina plan prescribed for you. Use prescribed medicine exactly as directed; do not take another person’s medicine. Note what you were doing, how the discomfort felt, how long it lasted, and whether rest or prescribed treatment helped.

Call emergency services immediately for new, severe, worsening, or persistent chest pain, especially with breathlessness, faintness, cold sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Seek urgent help if symptoms begin at rest, feel different from your usual angina, or do not settle with rest and your prescribed plan. Do not drive yourself.

Ask what triggers your symptoms, how to use each prescribed medicine, when to call emergency services, and which activities are suitable while your symptoms are being assessed. Ask whether you need a review if episodes are becoming more frequent or easier to trigger.
