What does chest pain feel like with acid reflux?

Chest Pain is a very common presentation of Acid Reflux and may feel like burning behind the breastbone. The discomfort can rise toward the throat, leave a sour taste, or worsen after eating, bending or lying down. Some people describe pressure or irritation rather than heat. Because heart and lung problems can feel similar, the sensation alone cannot establish the cause.

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upward into the oesophagus, where the lining is not suited to acid. This can irritate the area and produce burning discomfort, regurgitation, throat clearing or a hoarse voice. Symptoms may follow a large meal or appear when lying flat. Recurrent episodes should be assessed, especially when swallowing becomes difficult or painful.

Sit upright and avoid lying down soon after eating. Notice whether particular meals, alcohol, smoking or tight clothing bring symptoms on, and discuss patterns with a clinician or pharmacist. Use reflux medicines only as directed. Arrange a medical review when symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, or need frequent self-treatment.

Call emergency services for severe or new chest pressure, pain spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw, breathlessness, sweating, faintness, nausea or a feeling of impending collapse. Seek urgent assessment for chest pain that starts with exertion, does not settle, or feels unlike your usual reflux. Do not assume chest discomfort is reflux without evaluation when warning signs are present.

Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, whether heart or lung causes need checking, and which treatment is suitable. Mention meal timing, position, swallowing symptoms, medicines and any family or personal heart history.
