What does cervical cerclage treat?

Cervical insufficiency means the cervix can shorten or open without typical labour contractions. This can lead to pregnancy loss or Preterm Labour. A cerclage may be considered because of previous pregnancy history, an ultrasound showing cervical shortening, or an examination finding. It is not suitable for every pregnancy and cannot correct every cause of early birth.

The stitch is usually placed through the vagina with anaesthesia. The maternity team will discuss timing, examination, ultrasound monitoring, and when it should be removed. A stitch does not replace review for contractions, bleeding, fluid loss, or infection.
