What does cancer rehabilitation treat?

Short answer
Cancer rehabilitation treats treatment-related problems that affect movement, strength, energy, thinking, communication and daily activities.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What rehabilitation can address
A rehabilitation plan is tailored to the changes you are experiencing before, during or after cancer treatment. It may address persistent fatigue, reduced balance, weakness, pain-related movement limits, numbness or tingling after chemotherapy, and difficulty returning to work or self-care. Therapy can also help with memory and concentration problems after treatment. Depending on your needs, the team may include physical, occupational, speech or other rehabilitation professionals.
After head and neck cancer treatment, rehabilitation may focus on swallowing, speech, jaw movement, nutrition and neck or shoulder function. After tumour removal surgery, exercises and practical support may help you regain safe movement and independence. Rehabilitation does not remove cancer itself; it manages functional effects and helps you participate in everyday life.
How to begin
Write down what has changed, when it began and which activities are harder. Mention falls, altered sensation, fatigue, concentration difficulties, swallowing changes and equipment needs at your oncology appointment. A clinician can assess strength, coordination, mobility, cognition and daily tasks, then set achievable goals such as walking safely, dressing independently or conserving energy. Some exercises need supervision, especially after surgery or when balance is affected.
When to seek care promptly
Contact your cancer team promptly for new weakness, a fall, worsening numbness, trouble swallowing, breathlessness during ordinary activity, confusion or a sudden change in function. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, sudden one-sided weakness or inability to stay awake. These symptoms need assessment rather than a new exercise plan.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which rehabilitation professional fits your main difficulty, whether exercises should start now, how to pace activity around fatigue, and what symptoms should make you stop. Ask whether home adaptations, mobility aids or a caregiver-supported plan could make bathing, walking or preparing meals safer.
Questions people ask
Does cancer rehabilitation treat the cancer?
No. It treats functional problems caused by cancer or its treatment while cancer care addresses the disease itself.
Can rehabilitation help after chemotherapy?
It may help with problems such as fatigue, weakness, numbness, balance changes and memory or concentration difficulties.
