What does breast skin changes feel like with mastitis?

The skin over the affected breast may look pink or red and feel warmer than the other side. It can seem stretched, shiny, thickened, or sensitive to clothing and touch. The breast may also feel firm or heavy underneath the changed skin. Pain, a tender area, feverishness, chills, or body aches can occur. Mastitis can happen during breastfeeding, but it is not limited to that situation. The pattern can overlap with other breast conditions.

Rest and drink fluids. A cool cloth or wrapped cold pack may reduce discomfort, and a supportive bra can limit movement. If you are breastfeeding, feed or express in a way that feels manageable and avoid vigorous massage. Arrange medical advice when redness or tenderness is significant, symptoms are worsening, or you are unsure whether infection is involved. Use medicines only when appropriate for you.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, shaking chills, rapidly spreading redness, pus-like discharge, severe pain, or a firm area that persists. If symptoms do not improve or return after initial care, further assessment is needed. Get urgent help if you feel faint, confused, severely weak, or short of breath.
