What does breast skin changes feel like with inflammatory breast cancer?

The breast may enlarge or feel heavier over a short time, with redness or a dusky colour covering part or much of the breast. Skin can become firm, thick, or dimpled like orange peel. The nipple may flatten or turn inward, and the breast can feel itchy, sore, or unusually warm. A distinct lump may be absent. These features can resemble mastitis, so appearance alone cannot establish the cause.

Contact a clinician promptly if breast redness, swelling, warmth, or thickened skin develops quickly, particularly when it affects one breast or does not improve as expected. Photographing the visible change and noting its onset can help explain progression. Do not delay assessment while waiting for pain to appear; inflammatory breast cancer can cause little pain.

Seek same-day medical advice for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, a newly inverted nipple, significant tenderness, or a breast that feels hot and heavy. Go to urgent care for severe illness, faintness, confusion, or difficulty breathing. If treatment for suspected infection does not lead to improvement, return for reassessment and further testing.

Ask whether your symptoms could be inflammatory breast cancer or another condition, what examination and imaging are appropriate, and when you should expect follow-up. Tell the clinician about breastfeeding, recent infection, medicines, and the exact speed of the change.
