What does a breast lump feel like with HER2-positive breast cancer?

HER2-positive describes breast cancer cells that have an increased amount of a growth-related protein on their surface. The HER2 result comes from laboratory testing of breast tissue, not from the lump's texture, pain level or movement. Some people notice a lump, while others have a change found during imaging. Benign conditions can also feel firm, so examination is essential.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new breast lump or a persistent change. The evaluation may include an examination, diagnostic imaging and a biopsy when indicated. If testing confirms breast cancer, ask whether HER2 testing was performed, how the result affects treatment choices, and which team will coordinate your care. Bring a list of medicines and previous breast reports.

Seek prompt assessment for a growing or fixed lump, skin dimpling, redness or thickening, a newly pulled-in nipple, bloody discharge, or a swollen area in the armpit. Fever with a hot, painful breast also needs prompt care. These findings are not diagnostic, but delay can make evaluation harder.

Ask how the lump will be assessed, whether a biopsy is needed, and how pathology will identify HER2 status and hormone receptors. Ask what symptoms should prompt an urgent call, when results are expected, and who to contact between appointments.
