What does a breast lump feel like with fibrocystic breast changes?

Fibrocystic breast changes describe a range of normal tissue responses, including thickened areas, small fluid-filled cysts and general nodularity. The texture may seem uneven in both breasts or in one area, and soreness can rise and settle with hormonal changes. A lump that feels different from the surrounding tissue still deserves attention, because texture alone cannot identify its cause.

Check the area gently and note its location, tenderness and relation to your menstrual cycle. Arrange an assessment for a new lump or a change that does not settle. Wear a supportive bra if movement worsens discomfort, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you. Avoid repeated checking, which can make breast tissue more tender.

Seek prompt assessment for a persistent or enlarging lump, a hard fixed area, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a swollen armpit. A hot, red breast with fever needs prompt medical care. Fibrocystic changes can coexist with other findings, so a new or clearly different change should be examined.
