What does a breast lump feel like with a breast cyst?

A cyst is a fluid-filled sac within breast tissue. It may feel soft or firm, move slightly under the fingers, and become more noticeable or sore before a period. Some cysts are deep and hard to feel, while others make a distinct, smooth swelling. Touch alone cannot confirm whether a lump is a cyst; normal breast tissue and other benign changes can feel similar.

Notice where the lump is, whether it moves, how it changes with your cycle, and whether there is pain or nipple discharge. Arrange a clinical assessment for a new or persistent lump. A clinician may examine the breast and recommend imaging; an ultrasound can help show whether a lump is fluid-filled. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage the area, as this can increase soreness.

Seek prompt medical care for a new lump that remains, rapid enlargement, skin dimpling, redness or warmth, a pulled-in nipple, bloody discharge, or a swollen area in the armpit. Fever with a painful, red breast also needs prompt assessment. These signs can have several causes, so an examination is needed rather than a conclusion based on how the lump feels.

Ask whether the lump feels fluid-filled, whether imaging is appropriate, and what follow-up is needed if it remains. Tell the clinician when you first noticed it, whether it changes with your cycle, and whether you have had previous breast findings or a family history that affects your care.
