What does breast lump excision treat?

During this procedure, a surgeon removes the lump and usually sends it for laboratory examination. Excision may be considered for a growing or uncomfortable fibroadenoma, an intraductal papilloma, or a finding that cannot be fully assessed with a needle sample. It can also remove a lump that remains concerning after imaging and Breast Biopsy.

Removing a lump does not by itself explain every breast symptom or replace follow-up. The pathology result identifies what was removed and helps determine whether more care is needed.

Before surgery, discuss the incision site, anaesthesia, medicines, and how the result will be shared. Plan for limited strenuous activity while the wound heals. Use the prescribed pain plan, keep the incision clean and dry as directed, and attend the result appointment even if recovery feels straightforward.

Call the surgical team about persistent bleeding, a wound that opens, increasing redness, pus-like drainage, fever, or pain and swelling that are getting worse rather than settling. Seek urgent help for severe shortness of breath, fainting, or sudden heavy bleeding.

Ask why excision is recommended, whether a needle sample could answer the question, how much tissue will be removed, and when the pathology result will be ready. Ask how the scar may look and which changes should trigger a call.
