What does breast biopsy treat?

A clinician removes a small tissue sample, often with a needle, from an area seen or felt during an examination or imaging. A specialist examines the sample to clarify the cause of a lump, unusual scan result, skin change, or nipple discharge. Results may identify breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ, or a non-cancerous finding such as fibroadenoma or intraductal papilloma.

The procedure itself is diagnostic rather than curative. A benign result may mean that no further treatment is needed, while a cancerous or otherwise concerning result helps the care team choose the next step.

Ask which type of biopsy is planned, whether imaging will guide it, and how to prepare for medicines that affect bleeding. Afterward, keep the dressing in place as instructed and expect some tenderness or bruising. Follow the result plan even when the sampled area feels better; the tissue report, not the sensation alone, guides care.

Contact the clinic promptly for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing redness or warmth, drainage, fever, or worsening swelling after the procedure. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or rapidly worsening illness.

Ask what finding led to the biopsy, when results should be available, what the report could show, and what happens after each possible result. You can also ask whether a Breast Ultrasound or another test is needed.
