What does bone-strengthening therapy treat?

Medicines such as bisphosphonates or denosumab can slow the breakdown of bone. They may be used when cancer has spread to bone, including bone metastases from breast or prostate cancer, or when multiple myeloma affects bone. Treatment can reduce the chance of some skeletal complications and may help with persistent bone pain. It can also be used for high calcium in cancer, a condition in which calcium released from bone enters the bloodstream. This therapy does not remove the cancer itself; it is supportive treatment used alongside the cancer plan.

The choice of medicine depends on your cancer, kidney function, calcium level, dental health and other treatments. Your team may check blood tests before doses and discuss dental care because jaw problems, although uncommon, need attention.

Ask the oncology team whether your scan or blood results show a reason for bone-directed treatment. Tell them about kidney disease, dental procedures, loose teeth, numbness, muscle weakness or medicines that affect calcium. Keep scheduled blood tests, follow the dose timetable, and maintain the dental care advice you are given. Do not start calcium or vitamin supplements without checking first, because the right plan depends on your calcium level and treatment.

Contact your cancer team promptly for new or worsening bone pain, sudden difficulty standing or walking, or pain after a minor injury. Seek urgent help for new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, confusion, severe thirst or repeated vomiting. These symptoms can signal a fracture, pressure on the spinal cord or a significant calcium disturbance and need rapid assessment.
