What does bone pain feel like with prostate cancer?

Pain linked with prostate cancer may be felt in the back, hips, pelvis, or thighs, but its location and intensity differ between people. It can feel like a deep ache, pressure, or soreness rather than a surface sting. It may persist, disturb sleep, or become more noticeable with movement. Some people also have stiffness or reduced comfort when changing position. These features are not specific to cancer: arthritis, muscle strain, nerve irritation, and other bone problems can produce similar sensations. A new persistent ache should therefore be assessed in context, alongside urinary changes, fatigue, or known prostate problems.

Make an appointment for pain that lasts, recurs, or interferes with walking or sleep. Note the exact site, whether it travels, what movement does to it, and any urinary, weakness, or numbness symptoms. Tell the clinician about previous cancer diagnoses, prostate tests, injuries, and all medicines. They can decide whether examination, blood tests, or imaging is appropriate. Use only pain relief that has been checked for interactions and kidney, stomach, or other health concerns.

Get urgent medical help if back pain is accompanied by new leg weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, or changes in bladder or bowel control. Sudden intense pain, a fall followed by inability to move normally, or severe pain with fever also needs prompt evaluation. Do not wait for a routine visit when nerve function or mobility changes quickly.

Ask what could explain the pain, which tests can clarify whether bone involvement is present, and how to stay active safely. Ask how to monitor urinary or nerve symptoms, which analgesics are suitable with your current medicines, and who to contact if the pain changes overnight.
