What does bone pain feel like with osteosarcoma?

Osteosarcoma often affects a bone near a joint, such as the thighbone, shinbone, or upper arm. The discomfort may start intermittently and later interfere with sport, walking, sleep, or ordinary movement. The area can become tender, swollen, or warmer, and a nearby joint may feel stiff. A minor injury may draw attention to the area, but the pain pattern cannot establish the cause; many benign problems produce similar symptoms.

Arrange a medical appointment for bone pain that persists, progresses, recurs at night, or comes with swelling or a lump. Describe the exact site, how activity affects it, and whether movement or sleep has changed. A clinician may examine the area and arrange imaging; further evaluation is based on those findings. Avoid repeatedly stressing a painful limb until it has been assessed.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain after a minor injury, a visible change in the shape of a limb, or inability to use or bear weight on it. New weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control with back pain needs emergency assessment. Rapidly increasing swelling, severe night pain, or a growing lump should prompt a timely review even without an injury.
