What does bone pain feel like with osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis itself often causes no sensation before a fracture. When a vertebra, hip, wrist, or another bone breaks, pain can be localised, deep, and tender. A spinal compression fracture may cause back pain, muscle spasm, or a change in posture, with discomfort when standing, bending, or coughing. Pain can persist after the initial event. Aches from muscles, joints, or other bone conditions can feel similar.

Arrange an assessment for new persistent bone or back pain, especially after a minor fall, twist, lift, or cough. Keep a note of the trigger, location, movement limits, and whether the pain affects sleep. Until assessed, avoid lifting or movements that sharply increase pain and use support as advised. A clinician may consider an examination, imaging, and a plan to reduce future fracture risk.

Seek urgent help after a fall or injury if you cannot bear weight, a limb appears deformed, swelling develops quickly, or pain is severe. Back pain with new leg weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, or bladder and bowel changes needs emergency assessment. Sudden chest or rib pain with trouble breathing also needs prompt care.
