What does bone pain feel like with osteomyelitis?

Osteomyelitis is an infection in bone. Pain may build gradually or begin more suddenly, depending on how the infection developed. The skin over the area can feel sore or hot, and nearby joints may become stiff. Pain in the spine can be felt in the back, while infection in an arm or leg may cause guarding or difficulty using that limb. These features can overlap with injury and other illnesses, so the feeling is not diagnostic.

Contact a clinician promptly if persistent bone pain occurs with fever, chills, a wound, drainage, or redness. Mention recent surgery, an injury, a skin infection, or a condition that affects immune function. Assessment may include an examination, blood tests, and imaging; treatment depends on the organism and location. Do not squeeze a wound or stop prescribed antibiotics without medical advice.

Seek urgent care for high fever, shaking chills, rapidly spreading redness or swelling, confusion, fainting, or severe pain with reduced limb function.
