What Does Bone Pain Feel Like With a Benign Bone Tumour?

Pain from a benign bone tumour may feel deep, localised, aching, or pressure-like. It can become more noticeable with movement or activity, or disturb sleep when the area is irritated. Some people also notice tenderness, swelling, reduced movement near a joint, or a change in the shape of the affected area.

Many other problems can cause bone-area pain, including an injury, joint condition, infection, or nerve irritation. A clinician uses the location, pattern, examination, and imaging to understand what is happening; the sensation itself cannot distinguish a benign tumour from other causes.

Book an assessment if pain persists, returns without a clear injury, worsens, or limits sleep, work, or movement. Keep a short record of where it occurs, what brings it on, whether it is worse at night, and any swelling or weakness. Avoid increasing strenuous activity until the cause is clearer.

Your clinician may examine the area and arrange imaging. Bring a list of medicines and mention previous injuries, fevers, or a known bone lesion.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, a new inability to use the limb, visible deformity, weakness or numbness, or pain after a significant injury. Prompt medical advice is also needed for persistent pain with swelling, fever, or a rapidly enlarging area.
