What does blurred vision feel like with hypertension?

High pressure can place strain on small blood vessels, including vessels at the back of the eye. Vision may seem less sharp, distorted or difficult to focus. Some people have no warning symptoms, so a blood-pressure reading and an eye examination can provide information that the sensation alone cannot.

Most people with Hypertension do not develop a distinctive visual feeling that confirms the diagnosis. Blurred vision can also arise from eye conditions, migraine, medicines or changes in blood glucose. The symptom should therefore be assessed in context, rather than used to work out the cause at home.

If the blur is new or recurring, arrange a medical review and record when it happens, whether one or both eyes are affected, and any blood-pressure readings. Take prescribed treatment as directed and do not change it because of one reading without clinical advice.

Avoid driving or operating machinery while sight is unclear. Bring your medicines, recent readings and information about diabetes, kidney problems or pregnancy to the appointment, as these details can change the urgency of assessment.

Seek emergency help for sudden vision loss or marked worsening, blurred vision with weakness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe chest pain, severe breathlessness, confusion or a severe unusual headache. These may signal a stroke or another urgent problem.

Get same-day advice for a new persistent visual change, especially if you have a very high reading or feel unwell. Do not wait for a routine blood-pressure check if symptoms are escalating.
