What does blurred vision feel like with dry eye?

A healthy tear film makes the front surface of the eye smooth. When tears evaporate too quickly or do not spread evenly, the surface can become irregular and vision may look smeared, misty or out of focus. You may notice it more while reading, using a screen, driving or staying in air conditioning.

Most people with Dry Eye notice blurred vision alongside burning, grittiness, watering, redness or a feeling that something is in the eye. The blur may come and go rather than stay fixed, and blinking can briefly refresh the tear film. Blurred vision has other possible causes, so its pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Take regular screen breaks, blink fully and avoid direct airflow from fans or air-conditioning. Keep contact lenses out if they make symptoms worse, and do not rub your eyes. A pharmacist or eye clinician can advise whether lubricating drops are appropriate for you.

Arrange an eye assessment if the change persists, interferes with reading or driving, or keeps returning. Bring your contact-lens details and a list of eye products. Do not drive while your vision is unclear.

Get urgent medical help for sudden or severe loss of vision, severe eye pain, marked redness, injury, new flashes or a curtain-like shadow, or blurred vision with weakness, trouble speaking or a severe headache. These features need prompt assessment rather than self-treatment.

Contact an eye service promptly if light becomes very uncomfortable, discharge develops, or one eye is steadily worsening. A new change after contact-lens use also deserves timely advice.

Ask whether the tear film, eyelids, cornea and vision need checking; which drops suit your eyes; how long to try them; and whether contact lenses, medicines or another eye problem could be contributing.
