What Does Blood Transfusion Support Treat?

Red-cell transfusions can support oxygen delivery when anaemia causes symptoms such as breathlessness, dizziness, weakness, or persistent fatigue. Platelet transfusions support clotting when platelet levels are low and bleeding risk is a concern. The transfusion does not remove the underlying cancer or marrow disorder.

Support may be used during treatment for anaemia in cancer, leukaemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative neoplasms, or aplastic anaemia. The product and timing depend on blood tests, symptoms, bleeding, and the treatment plan.

Tell the team about previous transfusions, reactions, heart or kidney problems, allergies, and current medicines. Staff check your identity and blood compatibility before the product is given, then monitor you during and after the transfusion. Report new symptoms rather than waiting for the appointment to end.

Ask whether the planned product is red cells or platelets, what it is intended to improve, and how the underlying cause will be treated.

Tell staff immediately about fever, chills, itching, rash, flushing, back pain, chest discomfort, breathlessness, nausea, or sudden feeling unwell during a transfusion. After leaving, seek urgent advice for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, dark urine, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
