What does blood in stool feel like with ulcerative colitis?

Inflammation in the rectum and colon can make bowel movements frequent, urgent and uncomfortable. Blood may be bright red and mixed with stool or mucus, and some people feel they need to pass stool even when little comes out. Abdominal pain, fatigue, reduced appetite and fever may accompany active inflammation. Rectal bleeding can also have causes unrelated to ulcerative colitis, so a new or different pattern should be reviewed.

Follow your prescribed treatment plan and drink fluids regularly, particularly if stools are frequent. Keep a record of bowel frequency, bleeding, pain, temperature and medicines taken. Do not stop prescribed anti-inflammatory or immune treatment without medical advice. Contact your care team if symptoms are worsening, different from your usual pattern or interfering with drinking and daily activity.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fever with marked weakness, faintness, confusion or inability to keep fluids down. These may indicate severe inflammation, dehydration or another urgent bowel problem.
