What does blood in stool feel like with rectal cancer?

Blood may be bright red, darker, or mixed with stool. Some people notice mucus, narrower stools, repeated urges, straining or a sensation that the bowel has not emptied. Abdominal discomfort, tiredness or unplanned weight change can also occur. These features are not specific to cancer; piles, inflammation, infection and other bowel problems can cause similar symptoms, so an assessment is needed to identify the source.

Contact a clinician about any unexplained or recurring rectal bleeding. Describe its colour, whether it coats or mixes with stool, how long it has been present, and any change in bowel pattern. Bring a list of medicines and mention family bowel history. Assessment may include an examination, blood tests and a bowel test chosen according to your symptoms.

Seek urgent care for heavy or continuous bleeding, black stool, faintness, confusion, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or a swollen abdomen. Do not wait for a routine visit if you feel weak or cannot keep fluids down.

Ask what may be causing the bleeding, what examination or tests you need, and when results should be reviewed. If a bowel condition has already been diagnosed, ask which changes require prompt contact.
