What does blood in stool feel like with gastroenteritis?

The blood may look bright red on paper or mixed with diarrhoea. Gastroenteritis can inflame the bowel lining, while infectious forms may also cause fever, nausea, vomiting and marked urgency. The amount and appearance of blood do not identify the cause by themselves, so do not assume that every episode is a stomach infection.

Sip oral fluids regularly, rest, and note when the bleeding began, how often you pass stool, and whether the blood is on the paper, coating the stool or mixed through it. Avoid medicines that slow diarrhoea unless a clinician advises them when blood or fever is present. Arrange medical advice promptly so the cause and hydration can be assessed.

Seek urgent help for heavy or repeated bleeding, black or tar-like stool, faintness, confusion, severe abdominal pain, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a weakened immune system may need earlier assessment.

Ask whether testing is needed for infection, how to replace fluids safely, and which medicines to avoid. Tell the clinician about recent travel, shared meals, antibiotics, sick contacts and any bowel conditions.
