What does blood in stool feel like with bowel polyps?

Bowel polyps are growths from the inner lining of the bowel. Many do not cause a feeling at all. If a polyp bleeds, you may see bright red blood on the stool or toilet paper, darker blood mixed with stool, or a subtle change that is noticed only through a stool test. Bleeding is not necessarily painful because the bowel lining may not sense it in the same way as skin around the anus.

Bowel Polyps commonly present with Blood in Stool, but seeing blood does not show that a polyp is the cause. Haemorrhoids, fissures, inflammation, infection, and other bowel conditions can also bleed. A clinician may recommend stool testing or a bowel examination, depending on your symptoms and history.

Arrange medical advice for unexplained, repeated, or mixed-in bleeding. Note the colour, whether blood is on the surface or within the stool, and any change in bowel frequency, shape, or urgency. Tell the clinician about abdominal discomfort, tiredness, family history, and medicines that affect clotting. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice. Testing can determine whether a polyp or another source is responsible.

Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy, ongoing, or accompanied by faintness, dizziness, marked weakness, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, or black tar-like stool. Prompt review is needed for repeated bleeding with a sustained bowel-habit change, unexplained tiredness, or difficulty passing stool and gas. A small amount still deserves assessment when the cause is not known.
