What does blocked nose feel like with house dust mite allergy?

The inside of the nose can feel swollen, tight or full, making it harder to breathe comfortably through your nose. The blockage may alternate between nostrils or be more noticeable after waking, while cleaning, or in a dusty bedroom. You may also have sneezing, an itchy nose, a runny discharge, post-nasal drip or watery eyes. House dust mite allergy can keep the nasal lining irritated when exposure continues, so symptoms may recur indoors rather than behaving like a short-lived cold. A blocked nose alone cannot identify its cause.

Reduce bedroom dust where practical by washing bedding regularly on a hot cycle suitable for the fabric, using allergy-resistant mattress and pillow covers, and keeping indoor humidity controlled. Ventilate rooms when appropriate and ask someone else to dust or vacuum if those activities trigger symptoms. A saline nasal rinse may loosen mucus; use sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water and clean the device as directed. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether an antihistamine or nasal steroid is suitable, especially if you have other conditions or take medicines.

Arrange a medical assessment if blockage persists, repeatedly disrupts sleep, affects daily activities, or does not improve with sensible trigger reduction. Seek urgent help for severe trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms after an exposure. A clinician can examine the nose and consider allergy treatment or another explanation such as infection, polyps or a structural narrowing.
