What does blocked nose feel like with common cold?

Blocked Nose is a very common presentation of Common Cold. The nose may feel stuffy, swollen, or difficult to clear, with one nostril more blocked than the other at different times. You may need to breathe through your mouth, especially while sleeping.

A cold often brings a runny nose that later becomes thicker, sneezing, a scratchy throat, cough, tiredness, or a mild headache. Pressure around the nose can occur from congestion. Colour or thickness of mucus alone does not establish that an antibiotic is needed; the overall pattern and how you feel matter.

Rest, drink fluids, and use saline drops or a rinse to loosen mucus; use safe water and clean equipment. Warm steam from a shower may feel soothing, but avoid burns from hot water. A pharmacist can advise on pain relief or a short-term decongestant if suitable for you. Follow the label and check first if you have other medical conditions or take regular medicines.

Seek medical advice if symptoms are worsening rather than settling, persist beyond the expected cold pattern, or make it hard to function. Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, dehydration, severe headache with a stiff neck, swelling around an eye, or a very unwell appearance.
