What Does Eyelid Surgery Treat?

Upper eyelid surgery may reduce skin that folds over the lid crease or weighs on the lashes. Lower eyelid surgery may improve under-eye bags caused by fat pockets or lax lower-lid tissue. It can also soften the appearance of tear trough hollows when the surgical plan addresses nearby volume and contour, although a hollow may need a different approach.

The operation does not correct every cause of tired-looking eyes. Dark circles, fine lines, brow position, dry eye and changes inside the eye may need separate assessment. A consultation includes discussion of eyelid movement, vision symptoms, medicines and previous eye procedures.

Bring a list of medicines and describe whether heaviness affects reading, driving or side vision. Ask the surgeon to show which tissue is causing the concern and whether upper, lower or combined surgery is appropriate. Discuss healing, incision care, eye lubrication and how existing dry eye could affect recovery.

Seek prompt medical advice for sudden eyelid drooping, new double vision, severe eye pain, marked swelling, vision loss or bleeding after surgery. These symptoms need assessment rather than routine cosmetic follow-up.

Ask what the procedure is intended to change, what it will not change, and whether a brow or tear-trough treatment is relevant. Clarify the surgeon's experience, anaesthesia plan, expected restrictions and follow-up schedule.
