How it can feel

Cervical ectropion means delicate cells from inside the cervical canal are visible on the outer cervix. During pregnancy, the cervix can be more sensitive and prone to contact bleeding. You may see a small amount of pink, red, or brown blood on toilet tissue or underwear. It may settle quickly and may occur without pain; mild period-like cramps can have other causes and should be mentioned.

Bleeding in early pregnancy has many possible explanations, including changes in the cervix, miscarriage, infection, or ectopic pregnancy. The appearance of the blood cannot distinguish these causes.

Tell your maternity or gynaecology team about any bleeding in pregnancy, even when it is light. Note when it began, its colour and amount, whether sex or an examination preceded it, and whether pain, dizziness, or shoulder discomfort is present. Your clinician may recommend an examination, blood tests, or ultrasound.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for increasing or heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or feeling suddenly unwell. These symptoms require prompt assessment in pregnancy and should not be attributed to cervical ectropion without examination.
