What does bleeding between periods feel like with uterine fibroids?

Fibroids are growths in the muscle or surrounding tissue of the uterus. A fibroid that changes the shape of the uterine cavity can contribute to bleeding outside the expected cycle. The flow may be light or period-like, and it may stop and restart. Some people notice pressure in the lower abdomen, backache, cramps, frequent urination, or discomfort during sex; others have bleeding without these sensations.

Bleeding between periods is not specific to fibroids. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, infection, medicines, polyps, and cervical conditions can also cause it. A symptom pattern can guide an assessment but cannot establish the cause.

Keep a simple record of bleeding days, flow, clots, pain, pressure, and changes in urination or bowel habits. Arrange a gynaecology review for recurrent bleeding or symptoms of anaemia such as unusual tiredness or breathlessness. A clinician may use an examination and pelvic ultrasound to assess the uterus and discuss options based on fibroid location, symptoms, pregnancy plans, and overall health.

Get urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or persistent, you feel faint, have severe pain, develop fever, or become short of breath or very weak. If pregnancy is possible, report bleeding promptly because pregnancy-related causes need separate assessment.
