What does bleeding between periods feel like with cervical dysplasia?

The bleeding may appear as pink, red, or brown marks on underwear or toilet paper. Some people notice only a small amount; others have flow that resembles an early or late period. It may happen once or return over several cycles. Cervical dysplasia can also be present without noticeable symptoms, so the pattern of bleeding cannot confirm or rule it out. Other causes include changes in the cervix, infection, hormonal contraception, pregnancy-related problems, polyps, or changes in the uterine lining. A clinician may examine the cervix and arrange testing to identify the cause.

Arrange a medical appointment if bleeding between periods is new, recurrent, or follows sex. Note when it began, how much blood you see, its colour, whether there is pain or discharge, and where you are in your cycle. Mention contraception, pregnancy possibility, recent cervical screening, and any known abnormal result. Do not use leftover treatment for infection without advice. If you have been asked to attend follow-up for cervical dysplasia, keep that appointment even if the spotting stops.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, faintness, marked weakness, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy. Prompt assessment is also needed for bleeding after menopause or bleeding with foul-smelling discharge. These warning signs need attention because bleeding can have causes unrelated to cervical dysplasia and some require treatment without delay.
